We are in a century where the entire globe is evolving rapidly in terms of digitalisation. Every other day there is a revolutionary digital technology coming out in the market which we tend to use on a daily basis.

The development of these digital products and the constant evolution in the field of digitalisation means that we are constantly exposed to blue light emitted by electronic devices like cell phones, laptops, PCs and tablets.

We employ these digital technologies on a daily basis, and the usage can stretch to 9-10 hours a day. And mind you, it does have an impact on our health. To be precise, this can cause a very deep effect on our brain health.

So, today we will explore how this blue light affects our brain and then possibly we can chalk out some tips on how to prevent our brain from blue light.

What is Blue Light?

Blue light that is emitted by electronic devices like smartphones, PCs, laptops and tablets is a type of light with short wavelength and high energy.

Blue light is not only present in electronic devices but also in sunlight and some artificial light sources such as LED and fluorescent lights.

Every coin has two sides and so does blue light. Being exposed constantly can have some negative impact on the human brain but it has its benefits as well. Blue light helps to regulate our circadian rhythm. Alternatively, if exposed to blue light at night, it can disrupt your sleep patterns.

What effect Blue Light has on the brain?

What effect Blue Light has on the brain?

To better understand how to prevent our eyes from the strain that blue light has on our eyes, we have to first go through what effects it has on our brain.

There have been numerous studies on the effects of blue light on the human brain. Studies show that high exposure to blue light can induce retinal damage, which in turn leads to macular degeneration and other visual disorders (Source: ).

The exposure can further have a deep impact on sleep habits, making it difficult to fall and remain asleep. And disruption in sleep can further have a harmful impact on the brain which can lead to - impaired cognitive performance, memory issues and mood disturbances.

How can we protect our brain from Blue Light?

How can we protect our brain from Blue Light?

Now that we know the effects of Blue Light, here are some of the ways through which you can protect your brain.

1. Try using Blue Light filters

The first thing that you can do is, start using the blue light filters on your electronic devices. There are several smartphones, laptops, and other electronic devices that feature a built-in filter for the blue light reduction. If not available on the device, then there are several apps like Twilight, EasyEyes, and Darker.

2. Always limit your screen time

This may sound the easiest way to reduce the exposure to blue light but limiting your screen time, that too in the millenia we are living in, seems a bit difficult. But still we can try reducing the time spent on electronic devices, specifically before bedtime.

Instead what we can do is to try reading a book or have a conversation with the people around or just do a relaxing activity that doesn’t involve screens.

3. Try using Dim Lights

We usually use LED or fluorescent lights at home. Instead of these light sources, we should consider using dimmer lights. This will help reduce the exposure to blue light at night.

Warm-toned bulbs are best as they emit less blue light.

4. Always try to get plenty of Natural Light

Nothing better than nature right? If we expose ourselves to natural light during the day, our circadian system responds better by helping regulate our sleep patterns. Spend some time outdoors or try sitting near the window.

5. Try Blue Light Blocking Lenses

I would say the best way to reduce the exposure to blue light is by using the blue light blocking lenses. We have to use electronic devices on a day-to-day basis for official as well as personal use.

We spend a minimum of 7-8 hours a day in the office. And the constant use of electronic devices in the office means you are highly exposed to blue light. This may cause eye strain, headaches and dry eyes.

Using blue light blocking lenses means that your eyes would be exposed less to blue light and its after effects. They act as anti eye strain glasses and will help you reduce headaches.

To first understand how the blue light blocking glasses help reduce the exposure, we have to understand what these glasses are.

What are Blue Light-Blocking Lenses?

These lenses are specially designed to reduce the amount of blue light entering the eyes. Special materials are used in the production of such glasses. Blue light-blocking lenses are specially designed lenses that can reduce the amount of blue light that enters the eyes.

A blue light filtering or blocking lens consists of a monomer which is a material used in manufacturing a plastic lens with a blue light diverging material composed of a compound of thiophene and benzene to disperse blue light in a wavelength range of 380 to 400 nm.

What are the benefits of using Blue Light Blocking Lenses?

There are several benefits of using these glasses for the eyes:

Help Reduce Eye Strain

As told earlier, these glasses act as anti eye strain glasses. These lenses filter out blue light, reduce the amount of high-energy light that enters the eyes and this in turn causes less stress.

Prevent dry eyes

An extended exposure to blue light can cause dry eyes by reducing the amount of blink rate. Blinking is actually a natural way through which eyes stay lubricated. Using these lenses would help reduce the amount of blue light entering the eyes and promote healthy eye functioning.

Improving Sleep Quality

We all have a habit of using our smartphones before we sleep. But what we don’t consider at that time is the effects it would have on our sleeping pattern. The exposure of blue light at night causes disruption in our sleeping pattern. When we use these devices at night, the blue light suppresses the amount of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep.

But if we use these blue light blocking lenses, it can help improve sleep quality, allowing our body to produce more melatonin and promoting a better sleep cycle.

And we, at Specscart, have just the best Blue Light Blocking Glasses. Our exclusive range of X-Blue UV lenses (X-Blue Page Link). The X-Blue technology is infused within the monomer of these lenses that also have an anti-glare, anti-UV and scratch resistant coating applied to them.
