After the first trailer of Greta Gerwig's much-awaited ‘Barbie the Movie.’ starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, aired on April 4th, 2023, the buzz has been overwhelming. The Barbiecore trend has achieved a ‘cult status,’ and pink has become the OG colour of the season.
Being a true-blue Barbie-core proponent of Specscart, I cannot help but count the days till the movie releases, and I can strut to the theatre, wearing an ultra-feminine pink outfit with pearls, feathers, and glitters. What is the Barbiecore Trend?
The Barbiecore aesthetic is a sartorial take on femininity. It exaggerates all-things girly by 2x, and provides a new and more empowered meaning to the phenomenon. The trend has taken over mainstream fashion circles since 2022, and the upcoming live-action movie is further fueling the craze.
For instance, hundreds of Barbiecore Pinterest mood boards have been created since 2019. Well, it seems people had predicted the skyrocketing of the aesthetic five years prior! Besides, the term has been trending on TikTok, and hot-pink related items saw a 35 percent increased search volume on Etsy, as compared to preceding timelines.
Valentino’s 2022 Fall Runway Show further galvanised the Barbiecore aesthetic, and famous stars have graced red carpet events and off-duty looks in the incredibly saturated, and stark Valentino Pink PP. Fast forward to 2023, Viva Magenta is the ‘Pantone Colour of the Year,’ and oscar-winning director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie The Movie is causing a pink-hued frenzy.
The ‘Think Pink’ trend has been taking over the tides of popular fashion since we first saw Margot Robbie in the role of the iconic Mattel doll somewhere in 2022. A year later, the jitters are even higher. Well, fun fact! During the shooting of the Barbie Movie, pink paint became a scarcity around the world, as the film sets used up such colossal cans of the colour.
