Specscart X Sustainability Toward #BeatPlasticPollution | Specscart

Sustainability is a journey, not a destination! Achieving impactful goals, as an enterprise, comes with roadblocks as well as encouraging milestones! According to the UNEP’s Emissions Gap Report (EGR) 2022: The Closing Window, the international community is falling far short of the Paris Goals, with no viable pathway to 1.5 degrees C in place. Only an urgent system-wide transformation can avoid the impending climate disaster.

So, the clock is truly ticking, and as a brand that sells eyewear products with a certain ‘life cycle,’ what are the steps, albeit small, that we can take to relieve the planet from a climate crisis? This question has been bugging us since we started Specscart in 2017, and after months of brainstorming, we devised a multi-dimensional strategy to reduce plastic, eliminate wastes, and use eco-friendly and sustainable materials.

What is World Environment Day? Why Is It Celebrated?

The World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June every year. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 1973, the World Environment Day is the largest global platform for eco-conscious measures and sustainability efforts.

The main purpose of dedicating a day to the ‘environment’ is to promote awareness about the planet’s health. Besides, the celebration also aims to inculcate in the minds of the people the need to take individual and collective action to protect Mother Earth.

In the last 120 years or so, humanity has churned out mind-boggling inventions, created sprawls of industries, catered to even the minutest problems, increased the average life expectancy from 30 in 1900 to 72.2 in 2017, and bolstered the economy by a whopping 8000 percent during the same time period. But, the rapid development soon turned into ‘rampant,’ and we shunned the environment and its limited resources.

By forgetting that the ‘world has enough for everyone’s need, but not everyone’s greed,’ we now stand at a juncture wherein climate change, pollution, and global warming are not dilemmas of the future but problems that require immediate redressal. The solution?

Well, it begins with you, me, and us, and by understanding that universal cure to all the environment issues lies in ‘being human.’ And, for enterprises like Specscart, the key is about humanising the ‘behind-the-scenes’ of entrepreneurial ambiguity.

Sustainability and Specscart: The Steps We Take

The fashion industry is alleged to be among the biggest contributors of wastage and global pollution, and rightfully so. It is only in recent times that due to the rise of conscious consumerism, brands are taking accountability and moving toward the sustainability path.

However, as a young eyewear startup, our inception began with a pledge to be kind towards the environment, and take every step possible to provide sustainable, eco-friendly, and innovative eyeglasses products to our customers. We have not allowed the limitation in resources to nudge our determination to move forward as an eco-conscious brand in the United Kingdom, and of course, the whole wide world.

The building blocks of our success, as an enterprise, have also been our greatest responsibility. But, with efforts, ingenuity, and enthusiasm, we strive everyday to make Specscart a brand that is attuned to the needs of nature. Some of the things we do to promote sustainability are -
